As seen on a 1966 map, Gales Point Village Road used to go from Gales Point south over the Matamore Pine Ridge to Waterway 178, then downstream to the ocean. Then it crossed Mangrove Creek following the coastline south to Settlement 176.[1]

After Hurricane Hattie destroyed Mullins River in 1961, the Gales Point Road was moved further inland following the current alignment of the Road 4 from the Road 72 entrance to the Gales Point entrance.[2]

In 1986 the Road 4 was constructed using a large part of the Gales Point Village Road as described earlier. Thus the road was shortened by half.

In 2023 as part of the Sixth Road (Coastal Highway) Upgrading Project, the Gales Point Village Road was paved up to the start of the Gales Point Peninsula (17.1770838, -88.3315225).
