Hurricane #10 struck Monkey River Town on October 4, 1945 at 03:00 in the morning, with residents having no knowledge of the hurricane beforehand. By morning the hurricane had passed, leaving many houses and all the churches destroyed. Because the rivers rose so much, the town remained under 3ft of water for over a week.[2]
In 2001, Hurricane Iris nearly destroyed the entire village, leaving only 10 houses standing.[3]
The Catholic School had 53 students in 1927 and 53 in 1928.[4][5]

These services were subsidized by the government and mail was carried under contract.[7]
