History

In 1812, catholic refugees fled the war of Morazan in Omoa, Honduras and settled in Mullins River. In 1832, Fray Antonio (The first recorded catholic priest in British Honduras) also came from Honduras and settled in Mullins River, and from there visited the few Catholics that were in the colony at that time. In 1836 he left the colony, handing over his house to Father Rubio, who had just arrived from Bacalar. In 1837 this Father built the first catholic chapel in Mullins River, which was more like an Indian hut than a temple for God.[1]

A small hurricane shelter was constructed in 1963.[2]

Disasters

Mullins River was completely destroyed on the 31st of October, 1961 by Hurricane Hattie after it had destroyed Belize Town.[3]

Police

In 1948 the Police substation was reconstructed.[4]

In 1949 the police force consisted of 1 officer.[4]

Religious

From at least 1917[5] to 1925, Mullins River had a catholic mission under the Church of the Sacred Heart, from Stann Creek Town.[6]
