The Rio Grande Hydroelectric Project, a run-of-river plant of 2 to 2.6 MW, was built on the Rio Grande about three kilometres north of Settlement 250. It had a nine-metre diversion dam below the mouth of a natural cave, an 835 m canal and a 320 m penstock, and it fed a substation at the Big Falls junction on the Southern Highway. Its power purchase agreement was dated September 2003.[1] Cisco Construction built the plant, dam and canal between April 2005 and September 2006.[2] On March 20, 2026 the Public Utilities Commission proposed to grant Hydro Maya Limited an electricity licence for 3.0 MW.[3]
