In 1879, about 450 Italian men fled persecution in Guatemala and settled on public lands about the mouth of the Waterway 176, twenty miles south of Belize Town, where they engaged themselves as agricultural laborers. Their settlement was short lived. Most of the men soon went their own way and intermarried with the Negroid populations of the coast .
The descendants of these Italian settlers are found today in Belize, especially in Belize City. Persons with Italian surnames are all of color. The names themselves Aniello, Cafiero, Capece, Dandrea (d'Andrea) are all South Italian and/or Sicilian in their origin, most likely from Naples as surname data shows.[1]
