History

In 1888 the colonial government proposed establishing 3 Indian reservations with the northern one in the area where Copper Bank is today.[1]

The site of this village is believed to have been the location of a lost Mayan town, Uatibal. A few Mayan artifacts have been found here.

Up until the early 2000s the only access to Copper Bank was by boat.

Etymology

In 1980 this village was known as San Fernando, but by the 2000s it was called Copper Bank. Maybe it changed name during independence as some other villages did?

Religious Institutions

The Copper Bank Church is under the North Belize Mission Conference (Settlement 64) in the Belize Union Mission (Settlement 12) of the Inter-American Division (Miami, Florida) of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. In 2025 they had 33 members.[2]
