History
The Toledo Settlement was founded in British Honduras in 1867 by voluntary refugees from the American South
after the Civil War.
Most of the refugees went on to Brazil, but a small group went to British Honduras,
and took up land between the Moho River and the Rio Grande.
The settlement flourished for awhile, but it's ultimate failure was caused by social and economic factors.
None of the estates established were at a higher altitude than 150 ft. above sea level.
The area is now represented by the East Indian villages of the descendants of the indentured servants who came
to work for them.
These are
Forest Home,
Eldridgeville,
Jacintoville, and
Yemeri Grove.
Confederate graves can be found at the Forest Home Cemetery and also in Punta
Gorda.
