The Corozal-Sarteneja Road was formed in November 2018 when the upgrading of the Corozal-Sarteneja Road Project was initiated by cobbling together the Road 93, a section of the Road 92, a section of the Road 94 and then most of the Road 95.
The Corozal to Sarteneja Road Upgrading Project (42.3 km) was funded via a loan provided by Export-Import Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan). The GOBZ single sourced and signed a contract with Oversees Engineering & Construction Co. Ltd (OECC) S.A. to carry out a design and build project.
The Contract was signed on November 2018[1] for upgrading of 27 miles of the Corozal Sarteneja Road. This road project also involves construction of the Bridge 184 and the Bridge 61 which replaced the old, dilapidated ferries at Pueblo Viejo and Laguna Seca.
The project was broken into three components:
By 2024 61% of the project had been completed.[2]
The project was completed in 2025.[3]
Soon after the construction of the Corozal-Sarteneja Road a 200 meter section on the north side of the Pueblo Nuevo Bridge began to deteriorate quicly du to boggy soil underneath, and after a few months it stood under a foot of water constantly. So in May 2026 the Republic of China (Taiwan) loaned $4.4 million to the Government of Belize to construct a 200 meter bridge over the gap.[4]
