Orange Walk used to be one of the main villages along the Belize River, and later when the Western Highway was constructed it was one of the prominent villages along the highway. Then when the new capital Belmopan was constructed, Orange Walk disappeared.
From at least 1917[1] to 1918[2] Orange Walk had a catholic mission under Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, from Benque Viejo del Carmen Town. But by 1925 it was under the Church of the Sacred Heart, from El Cayo Town.[3]
